Leisure & Touristic Information

LNGS is embedded in the magnificent natural landscape of the Gran Sasso National Park. May in Gran Sasso is a wonderful spring time. Attendees might enjoy fantastic trekking routes as well rock climbing, wine and cheese tasting. With a bit of luck eagles and wolves can be spotted during mountain trips. Social events like a dinner, visit to the Underground Physics Lab of LNGS, and a touristic tour are obviously foreseen to maximize the pleasure of your staying with us.

Sights

There are several churches and monuments of historic and artistic value, the heritage of its rich medieval past, such as the Fountain of the Ninety-Nine Spouts, almost a symbol of the city, the massive 16th-century Spanish castle, which crowns the city's highest point, the Basilica of St. Bernardine, the greatest Renaissance church in Abruzzi, and the Church of Saint Mary in Collemaggio, the most outstanding example of Abruzzi Romanesque architecture, where Peter from Morrone was crowned Pope in 1294, leaving to the city the invaluable gift of the Perdonanza, celebrated every 28th August since that time.
The grandiose ruins of Amiternum, just outside the center of L’Aquila (S.S. 80), include a theater and amphitheater that have been almost completely uncovered, making this the oldest and most well-known archaeological site. Nearby, one can also find the impressive Catacombs of San Vittorino. Other noteworthy sights include the massive structures brought out of their multi-century slumber in Peltuinum, located between Prata d’Ansidonia and Castelnuovo di San Pio delle Camere. There are also two extensive necropolises of great significance: Bazzano, in the valley just east of L’Aquila proper, and Fossa. Visitors can take picturesque journeys through the many ancient tombs, where priceless jewels, gold, ivory, and colored glass artifacts were discovered.
